Finding Spiritual Bliss: How Egypt Transformed My Life in 13 Days

Embarking on a journey to Egypt felt like stepping into a realm of endless wonders and unexpected marvels. With my husband by my side, we spent over a year preparing for this adventure, immersing ourselves in the rich history and mythology of this mystical land. Our hearts were set on a spiritual quest, tracing our steps from Cairo to Aswan, absorbing every lesson that this ancient land had to offer. Reflecting on our extraordinary 13-day journey, several key moments have left an indelible mark on my soul.

Embrace the Differences

This was my first time setting foot in the Middle East, and from the moment we stepped off the plane, I felt the embrace of a land steeped in ancient energy. The air was thick with dust, a reminder that we were in a place where the sands of time had settled deeply. Everything was different from my Colorado home—the language, the culture, the rhythm of life. But instead of resisting, I chose to flow with it, to be carried by the current of something much greater than myself. The food, the music, the very essence of Egypt beckoned me to dance in the unknown. By surrendering to the unfamiliar and approaching it with gratitude, I found beauty in every moment. If you cling to the comforts of home, you may miss the magic that awaits you in the world beyond.

Unity In Diversity

Sitting in a humble home in a village on an island in the middle of the Nile, I was enveloped by the harmonious echoes of laughter and the warmth of multi-generational living. Amidst the exchange of bread and tea, I felt a profound sense of belonging, as if I had found a family away from my own.

Despite the differences, the similarities were undeniable. As the grandfather offered us tea, his daughter guided us around their home, sharing their way of life. As a designer, I was particularly struck by the thoughtful use of color and pattern, evoking beauty and joy. A child clung to her grandmother's leg, while eager smiles greeted us outside, proud to show off their bountiful farm. We carried some bread back to our boat, and the experience continued to nurture us long after we left. That evening, we enjoyed a BBQ on the beach, the Nile providing a serene backdrop.

Local musicians played as we danced with our boat’s crew, our faces illuminated by the biggest smiles. The rhythmic dancing gave way to cardamom-flavored Arabic coffees, and our night was complete. If you find yourself caught up in the differences, I encourage you to look at how we are all the same.

Wake Up in the Dark

The first time I laid eyes on the great pyramids and the Sphinx was at twilight. As the full moon dipped below the horizon and the sun rose, a sense of balance filled the air. Our small group of ten made our way past the guards for a private morning meditation at the Sphinx. In the distance, the waking city echoed with the call to prayer and the bustle of the morning commute. In that serene moment, I focused on my meditation, sharing my hopes and dreams with the ancient energy surrounding me. It was a powerful and deeply spiritual experience, grounding me in the present while connecting me to the past.

Stay in Wonder and Awe

Take a moment to close your eyes, inhale deeply, and reflect on the thousands of years of history that have preceded this very moment. The landscape is steeped in the remnants of ancient civilizations—temples, relics, and tombs, each holding a unique story waiting to be discovered. Across countless dynasties, history and myth intertwine, creating a rich tapestry that has paved the way for the present.

Artistry is everywhere you look. From the columns to the ceilings, the environments surrounding you are filled with mystery and wonder. I initially worried that visiting so many sites might feel repetitive, but I quickly learned that each place holds its own unique energy and story. In interior design, we strive to master such intention, beautifying the homes of clients and commercial spaces alike.

As our journey unfolded, the characters depicted on the walls became familiar, almost as if I had been there before. Each space welcomed me, and by staying in wonder and awe, I felt a deeper connection to the history and energy of the land.

Just one more minute, this resonance will always be with me and I am grateful.

Honor Its People and History

Carry peace in your heart. Though I often feel it back home, I truly walked through Egypt with a peaceful heart, determined to share light, peace, and honor with everyone I met. I approached each experience with complete gratitude, not knowing what would unfold next.

Remember, you are a visitor in a Muslim country. This is not the place for a photoshoot in short shorts or cocktails by the beach. While you may never fully blend in as a foreigner, you can choose to be a mindful guest. Be there to learn, to observe, to grow. Engage with the people, have conversations, share a smile. Learn a few basic words in the local language—'Shokran' (thank you) and 'Inshallah' (God willing) go a long way.

Share Your Story

Before I went to Egypt, I encountered resistance from peers—comments like "Why would you go there? It’s not safe!" were common. The unknown can trigger deep, irrational fears in some people. But I'm here to tell you that it’s possible to create a travel experience as perfect as you imagine. See the beauty, limit your judgment, do your research, and let your internal compass guide you.

Travel can be sacred, expansive, and humbling. It offers the opportunity to step outside the comfort zone of our everyday lives and experience humanity on a greater scale. By embracing new cultures, we free ourselves from the fear of the unknown. I am forever humbled, inspired, and expanded by the generosity of the people and the places I was blessed to encounter.
